Award Categories

 

Green Building Wood Design Award
Wood contributes significantly to the overall environmental performance of any building by reducing energy use, reducing resource use, minimizing pollution and sequestering carbon. Nominations in the Green Building Award category should demonstrate how some, or all, of these principles have been applied in the building's design and construction.

 

Interior Wood Design Award
The Interior Design Award will be given to a project that highlights an interior where wood has been used extensively in a non-residential or public space. Applications can include wood cladding, finishes, flooring, millwork, fixtures and furniture. Projects of merit will show ingenuity and resourcefulness while demonstrating the particular qualities of wood such as its versatility, durability and beauty. Only projects that incorporate some percentage Ontario wood products will be considered eligible for this award.

 

Residential Wood Design Award
Wood Design Awards honour the creators of new projects that push the limits of wood design in structures that demonstrate excellence in the use of wood. Winning projects will showcase the special qualities of wood such as strength, durability, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. The Residential category includes single-family and multi-family buildings.

 

Multi-Unit Wood Design Award
Wood Design Awards honour the creators of new projects that push the limits of wood design in structures that demonstrate excellence in the use of wood. Winning projects will showcase the special qualities of wood such as strength, durability, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. The multi-unit category includes commercial applications, offices, stores, malls, condominiums, multi-unit residential, resorts and other public spaces.

 

Commercial Wood Design Award
Wood Design Awards honour the creators of new projects that push the limits of wood design in structures that demonstrate excellence in the use of wood. Winning projects will showcase the special qualities of wood such as strength, durability, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. The Commercial category includes industrial buildings, offices, stores, malls and other public spaces.

 

Institutional Wood Design Award: < $10 M.
Wood Design Awards honour the creators of new projects that push the limits of wood design in structures that demonstrate excellence in the use of wood. Winning projects will showcase the special qualities of wood such as strength, durability, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. The Small Institutional category includes schools, churches, hospitals, long-term care facilities, libraries, recreational facilities and municipal buildings with construction budgets less than $10 million.

 

Institutional Wood Design Award: > $10 M.
Wood Design Awards honour the creators of new projects that push the limits of wood design in structures that demonstrate excellence in the use of wood. Winning projects will showcase the special qualities of wood such as strength, durability, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. The Large Institutional category includes schools, churches, hospitals, long-term care facilities, libraries, recreational facilities and municipal buildings with construction budgets greater than $10 million.

 

Northern Ontario Excellence Award
Wood Design Awards honour the creators of new projects that push the limits of wood design in structures that demonstrate excellence in the use of wood. Winning projects will showcase the special qualities of wood such as strength, durability, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness.
The Northern Ontario Excellence Award recognizes the significant contribution Northern Ontario makes to the forest economy and the special link that exists between this industry and northern communities. This award focuses on projects unique to northern Ontario that honour this relationship through the use of Ontario wood products.

 

Jury’s Choice Award
Nominations are not accepted in this category. The Jury’s Choice Award is given at the sole discretion of the Jury and will be presented in years where an outstanding and memorable nomination is received for a project that, for whatever reason, does not win in the category for which it is submitted.

 

Engineer Wood Advocate Award
The Wood Advocate Awards recognize decision-making individuals who regularly specify, design or build commercial, industrial, and institutional projects with wood. These awards acknowledge those individuals who contribute to the selection of wood in a project, who overcome objections related to wood use in a project, and who lead the way for future projects in wood.
The Engineer Award will be presented to an individual engineer or engineering firm for the creation of an innovative structure, of any building type, that uses new technologies or existing technology in a new way in order to create a wood solution that advances the use of wood in the project, leading the way for future projects in wood.

 

Architect Wood Advocate Award
The Wood Advocate Awards recognize decision-making individuals who regularly specify, design or build commercial, industrial, and institutional projects with wood. These awards acknowledge those individuals who contribute to the selection of wood in a project, who overcome objections related to wood use in a project, and who lead the way for future projects in wood.
The Architect Award will be presented to an individual architect or architectural firm who contributes to the selection of wood in a project, overcomes objections to the use of wood in a project, and leads the way for future projects in wood.

Wood Champion
The forest products industry is an important part of the provincial economy. It is therefore crucial for leaders to be actively involved in supporting this industry on many different fronts. Whether a person’s individual efforts are focused on design, research, education, innovation or advocacy, the Wood Champion Award will be presented to and individual or group whose work directly supports the future of the forest products industry. Wood Champions strive for excellence and stand out as persuasive advocates for wood.
